Ingredients

Method

1

Add the oats, chia seeds, turmeric, ginger, cinnamon and a pinch of black pepper to a jar or bowl. Stir to combine the spices evenly with the oats.

2

Pour over the milk and stir well. Add the honey or maple syrup and stir again. The mixture will look quite liquid — this is correct, the oats and chia seeds will absorb it overnight.

3

Cover and refrigerate for at least 6 hours, or overnight. The oats will thicken to a creamy porridge-like consistency.

4

In the morning, give the oats a good stir. If they feel too thick, add a splash more milk to loosen. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.

5

Top with sliced banana, fresh blueberries or a drizzle of almond butter. Eat cold straight from the fridge, or warm gently in a saucepan or microwave if you prefer.

Why this recipe works

The nutrition behind the ingredients

Turmeric contains curcumin, one of the most well-researched anti-inflammatory compounds in nutrition. The black pepper in this recipe is essential — piperine in black pepper increases curcumin absorption by up to 2000%. Ginger further supports digestion, helping to settle the gut and reduce bloating, while cinnamon supports blood sugar balance. Rolled oats are a gentle source of soluble fibre (beta-glucan) which feeds beneficial gut bacteria — making this a breakfast that truly supports your microbiome from the very first meal of the day.
